Your 4-Week Hearing Guide
Your 4-Week Hearing Guide
Adjusting to new hearing amplifiers takes time, and that is completely normal. Amplified sound is new to your ears and your brain, so the first days can sound sharp or unusual. Follow this simple week-by-week plan and judge your amplifiers at the right time, with the right settings.
This guide applies to every model we sell: Clarity Pro CIC, Clarity Pro RIC, Clarity Pro Micro CIC (JD-6118E), JD-931, JD-916, JD-955 and JD-5118L.
Shop Hearing AmplifiersDay 1: Three Checks Before You Start
Almost every "the sound isn't right" message we receive comes down to one of these three things. Check them first and the rest of the guide will go much more smoothly.
Make sure your ears are clear
An amplifier cannot send sound through a blocked ear canal. If the sound seems muffled or faint whatever you do, or the amplifier keeps whistling even with a good fit, a build-up of ear wax is the most common cause. If your ears have not been checked in the last year, ask a pharmacist or your GP to take a look before you judge the product. The NHS earwax guidance explains what to expect. Please avoid cotton buds, which tend to push wax further in.
Find the ear tip that seals
Your amplifiers come with several ear tip sizes for a reason. The right tip sits snugly without pressure and stops sound leaking back out, which is what causes whistling. Try each size in turn, starting with the medium. If gently pressing the amplifier stops the whistling, the tip is too small. If it aches after twenty minutes, it is too large. For most people the correct size is not the one they would have guessed.
Start at a low volume
Begin on the lowest setting you can hear comfortably and increase it slowly over the first week. Turning the volume up high on day one is the second most common cause of whistling and of sound feeling harsh.
If you need the volume set to maximum to hear clearly, please contact us before continuing. A personal sound amplifier may not be the right product for you, and we would rather help you find that out early.
ForSound app models (Clarity Pro, JD-5118L and JD-6118E): complete the setup in the ForSound app before your first session and keep the volume slider in the lower third for the first few days.
Week 1: Start Slow in a Quiet Space
Where: at home, in quiet rooms. Reading, one-to-one conversation, the TV at a normal volume.
How long: 1 to 2 hours per day, in short sessions.
This week is meant to sound strange. Your own voice will seem loud, footsteps and rustling paper will stand out, and voices may sound sharp or slightly electronic. That is your brain noticing sounds it has not been paying attention to for a while. It settles with daily use.
Judging your amplifiers during week 1 is the single most common reason people give up on them too early. If you notice whistling this week, go back to the Day 1 checks. Nine times out of ten it is the tip or the volume.
Week 2: Step Outside and Listen to the World
Where: a walk in the park, a quiet street, a café at an off-peak time.
How long: 3 to 4 hours per day.
Outdoor sound is busier, so expect wind, traffic and birdsong to feel more defined than you are used to. Keep the volume where it was comfortable indoors rather than turning it up to compete. If your model has a noise reduction setting, this is the week to try it.
By the end of week 2 the sharpness from week 1 should be fading. If it is not, or you are still unsure, please contact us before requesting a return. A quick conversation about your settings and tip size solves most concerns.
Week 3: Enjoy Conversations and Social Moments
Where: family meals, a restaurant, a meeting, a group of friends.
How long: 5 to 6 hours per day.
This is where amplifiers earn their keep, and also where expectations need to be realistic. No amplifier removes background noise completely. What you should notice is that the voice in front of you is easier to follow, and that you are asking people to repeat themselves less often.
Sit with your back to the noisiest part of the room where you can, and face the person you are talking to. Small habits like these make a big difference.
Week 4: Feel Natural, Stay Balanced
Where: your normal day. Shopping, travel, work, events.
How long: most of the day, with short breaks.
By now wearing your amplifiers should feel routine. Give your ears short breaks to rest, keep the volume steady, and take note of the situations where they help most.
This is the point to judge them fairly. If you have followed the guide, you are still well inside your 30-day return window.
Everyday Care Tips
- Charge your amplifiers every night so they are ready each morning.
- Wipe the ear tips daily and check the sound outlet for wax. A blocked tip sounds exactly like a faulty amplifier.
- Store them in their case, somewhere dry, overnight. A drying box helps if you use them while exercising or live somewhere humid.
- Do not rush. Gradual use is what makes them comfortable long term.
- If you need guidance, our UK-based support team is always here to help.
Still Whistling or Not Sounding Right?
Work through this list in order. Most people find the answer at step one or two.
- Try the next ear tip size up and check it seals.
- Lower the volume by two or three steps.
- Clean the tip and the sound outlet.
- Keep hands, hats, scarves and phone handsets a little away from the amplifier.
- If none of that helps, have your ears checked for wax.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get used to hearing amplifiers?
Most people feel comfortable within two to four weeks of daily use. The first few days usually sound sharp or unusual, which is normal and passes with regular wear.
Why do my hearing amplifiers whistle?
Whistling is sound leaking out of the ear and back into the microphone. The usual causes are an ear tip that does not seal, the volume set too high, or a blocked ear canal. Changing the tip size and lowering the volume fixes it in most cases.
Do I need my ears checked before using an amplifier?
If your ears have not been checked in the last year, it is worth asking a pharmacist or GP to look for wax. Amplifiers cannot work well through a blocked ear canal, and wax is a common reason for muffled sound.
What if I need the volume on maximum?
Contact us. Needing the maximum setting to hear clearly usually means a personal sound amplifier is not the right product for you, and we will help you decide what to do next, including a return if that is the best option.
Does the 30-day return window cover the four weeks?
Yes. You can follow the full guide and still return the product within 30 days of delivery if it is not right for you. We simply ask that you contact us first so we can check your settings, and that the ear tips are returned clean.
